Kathleen Irene Paterka by Anora O'Connor of A13 StudiosInterview with Kathleen Irene Paterka ~

Thanks so much for inviting me to be a part of your blog today, Annie! As much as authors tend to be private people, living isolated lives as they indulge in the creation of their own imaginary worlds, we actually do enjoy connecting with real people!

Annie: Thank you for taking the time to participate in this interview. I enjoyed getting to know you better.

Q:  When did you realize you were a novelist?

I don’t think there was any one specific moment when the realization struck me. I started writing at a very early age, and I grew up knowing that someday I would write books. While in school, my professors attempted to steer me towards poetry and short stories, but I rebelled. I never had any interest in anything but novels. I love the freedom which comes from having at least 100,000 words (or 400 pages) to play with. A novel allows the author to explore all sorts of character development and themes.

Q:  As you geared up for your Book Release of “SECRETS OF THE ROYAL WEDDING CHAPEL”, what was the most exciting part(s) for you?Kathleen Irene Paterka at the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign, September 2015 (3)

What a fun question! I think it was the ‘reliving the Vegas theme’ part. My daughter and her family live in Las Vegas, and my husband and I recently flew in to spend some time with them. We visited the famous Vegas Strip (check out the photo of me at the Welcome sign!), and also spent some time exploring Caesar’s Palace (where much of the book takes place). Vegas is such an interesting town. Being able to use that backdrop as a location for the book’s setting provided a fascinating dynamic. There are numerous wedding chapels all throughout Vegas, and the Royal Wedding Chapel fit right in!

Q:  You have several books, what is that your favorite topic to explore?

Interpersonal relationships fascinate me, and I tend to gravitate towards anything that causes disharmony. Husband vs. wife. Mother vs. daughter. Friend vs. Friend. What happened to cause the chaos? How can it be resolved? I write women’s fiction; each of my six novels deals with issues which will resonate with women. The women’s fiction genre can be hard to define; it doesn’t necessarily include romance (though it can), and it doesn’t necessarily promise a happily-ever-after (but it sometimes does). Women’s fiction revolves around how the main character(s) deal with particular issue(s) in their lives, and the emotional journey and growth which results. In Secrets of the Royal Wedding Chapel, the heroine Lily Lavendar has relationship issues with both her aging mother Mimi (who owns the wedding chapel) and teenage daughter Tori (who runs away from home to be with Mimi and help run the chapel). Though Lily has no interest in running the chapel, she returns to Las Vegas to ‘rescue’ Tori from the nonsense of ‘happily-ever-after’. But when she arrives in Las Vegas, a family crisis forces Lily into the wedding chapel business, and she’s trapped in the dilemma of what to do?

Q:  Is there an author that you feel resonates with you and your writing style?

I tend to read anything in the women’s fiction genre. Novelist Jane Porter (The Frog Prince, Flirting With Forty) made a big impact on my writing with her use of 1st person present tense. I explored that particular voice in a few of my novels (Fatty Patty, Lotto Lucy, and Secrets of the Royal Wedding Chapel). For my current work-in-progress, I’m using 1st person past tense. That narration seems to fit with the book.

Q: When do you typically write?  Where do you write?  Set this up for us…

My home office has a desk which faces the wall so I’m not distracted by people or things. There’s a sign on the office door which reads: “Caution! Is the house on fire? Is there blood involved?” Unless those two things apply, my family learned long ago never to bother me when the door is closed. I’m an early-morning person, and take advantage of those creative energies and mental abilities by writing during the early morning hours. Two hours working on my latest work-in-progress, then I’m done for the day. The rest of the day is spent writing blogs, connecting on social media, and spending time with family and friends.

Q:  May I ask who your favorite authors are?  Books?

Women’s fiction is my favorite genre. I’ll read anything written by Jennifer Weiner (Good in Bed, We All Fall Down) or Jodi Picoult (her novel Change of Heart is excellent). My favorite novelist? Stephen King. While I don’t care for his futuristic or sci-fi books, some of his other novels have a permanent home on my ‘keeper’ shelf. King’s book 11/22/63 is one of my all-time favorites. It’s about a man from contemporary time who discovers a time warp, and travels back in time to try and prevent the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. If you haven’t read 11/22/63, I urge you to grab a copy today.

Q:  What is your favorite part of being an author?

People fascinate me, and I love exploring why they behave like they do. ‘What happened?’ is where the story magic begins. For me, the best part of being an author is being able to escape to my office, sit behind my computer, and fall into the imaginary world I’ve created on the screen. I love spending time with my characters. There’s always a certain sadness that occurs when I type ‘The End’. It’s hard to say goodbye to characters in a book.

Q:  When can we expect your next book?  Do you want to tell us a little bit about it?

My current work-in-progress is about a father-daughter team who own and manage a restaurant together. When a stranger shows up at the restaurant one day, the family is thrown into chaos. But why? What happened? Why would one person’s presence cause such a huge disruption in their lives? Why did the father do what he did so many years ago? Why does the daughter react the way she does when she learns the truth? And what about the stranger? How does her presence impact their lives? The book does not have a title or a release date. I estimate it will probably be available sometime in 2016.

Lastly, Book or eBook??

Do I prefer reading books or eBooks? Both! I love my Kindle, but I’m also a huge fan of our local public library. Free books! Who doesn’t love free books? My dream was always to have my own books available in our public library. Pinch me! My dream has come true! I can walk into our library and see my own books sitting on the shelves. My six novels are also available on all digital channels, (Amazon, Barnes & Noble, iTunes, and Kobo), plus in print (Amazon).

Thanks again for hosting me today, Annie! I hope this little bit of info I’ve shared about myself, my books, and my writing life has proved helpful for readers. What I find amazing is that every book in the world is just a combination of 26 different letters. It’s how an author strings those 26 letters together in different combinations that provides for a fascinating read. And isn’t that what we’re all searching for? Whether you’re an author or a reader, all of us want a great book to read. Hopefully I’ve given you a little bit of my inside world, and some tips today. Happy reading!

#SPOTLIGHT & #BOOKREVIEW: “The Other Wife” by Kathleen Irene Paterka

This is a MUST-READ Novel…Check back Friday for Kathleen’s interview and Giveaway…The winner will be able to choose ONE Of her books to be sent to them 🙂 GREAT GIVEAWAY…I highly recommend this one:

The Other WifeSUMMARY:

Till death do us part…

Eleanor Anderson has a beautiful home, a loving husband, a tranquil life. After thirty-eight years of marriage and her children now grown, she finally has time for herself. She’s not expecting any surprises; certainly not to wake up one morning and find her husband dead in bed beside her from a massive heart attack. It’s a devastating discovery… but not as much as the shock awaiting Eleanor when she learns the truth about her husband’s secret life. And then there’s the damaging document he signed before his death, which threatens to destroy her life.

Claire Anderson isn’t your average thirtysomething. A professor of psychology at a prestigious university, Claire has a successful career, a handsome husband, and two young children at home. But nothing in her background, including her academic accomplishments, prepares Claire for the horrendous reality of discovering that the life she’d led was all a lie… fostered by a husband who’d promised to love and cherish her forever.

Two women from two generations, bound together by denial, anger, and grief. How far will their misery and fear push them? Does compassion rule the day, or will a husband’s betrayal lead to a woman’s revenge?

What happens when each of these women comes face-to-face with the other wife?

This Women’s Fiction Family Life novel deals with women’s fiction romance, as well as women’s fiction adult issues.

My Review:

Kathleen Irene Paterka is a brilliant writer.  Her use of the English language is brilliant.  I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, not only because of the storyline, but because Paterka told it so beautifully.
I don’t know which is worse, finding your husband has died of a massive heart attack next to you in bed, finding out that your husband left all of his Life Insurance money to another woman, OR that the woman is also his wife.
Eleanor was married to Richard Anderson for 38 years, they have two adult children together, a home….a life.  Richard let on that his work took him overseas to the Middle East, when in fact he was just going a few towns over to be with his other wife and family.  Four years before his death, he married Claire Anderson, and they had two toddler age children together.
This is the story of them finding out about one another and how they deal with the fall out of this information about the man they both loved.
Brilliant!!!!  You will not be able to choose a side.

5 Stars.

#BOOKREVIEW: “French Twist” by Glynis Astie

French TwistSUMMARY:

Sydney Bennett had spent her life in pursuit of perfection. She planned, weighed her options and made careful choices based on calculated outcomes. Through all of her efforts, she had come pretty close to perfection, if she didn’t say so herself. She had fled the cold winters in New York for sunny California, found a job that she loved and lived in the same town as her sister, and best friend, Kate. The one area of perfection that had always eluded her was her love life. No matter how hard she tried, she always ended up with a broken heart. After a particularly traumatic breakup, Sydney vowed that she was done with love.

Just as Sydney threw herself into her new plan to forget about men, a handsome Frenchman tossed all of her intentions out the window as he swept her off of her feet. Louis Durand had lived a life filled with excitement and adventure. He was impetuous, intelligent and incredibly charming. So naturally, he scared Sydney half to death. From the moment they met, Louis and Sydney’s romance progressed at warp speed. Sydney did her best not to run, but her deep rooted relationship anxiety threatened to provide an easy exit. When Louis mentioned marriage before Sydney even knew his favorite color, she was more than tempted to reach for her running shoes. Will she be able to put her fears aside to follow her heart? The one thing that Sydney will learn is that sometimes perfection comes with a twist…

REVIEW:

This is a definitely a TOP NOTCH CHICK LIT novel! Glynis Astie introduces us to Sydney Bennett. I fell in love with this character. She is 27 years old, working hard, and very close to her sister, Kate. I loved knowing that this story is based on Glynis’ love story with her French husband. Knowing that it really worked out, was super cool!

At the beginning of the book, Sydney is giving up on love because her last boyfriend left with a broken heart. Then she meets, Louis Durand and everything changes. Their romance was coming to life super-fast, and it was so much fun to read about. They are going a little too fast for Sydney’s liking. But, I think their love had a life of its own.

Sydney’s life is going well in all areas but her love life. Will Louis change that?

I cannot wait to read the second book in this series, “French Toast”

5 Stars.

Be Sure to check out my interview with Glynis Astie, posted this past Friday! She is too fun!

Glynis head shotMeet Glynis Astie, and enter for a chance to win one of 2 Sets of eBooks! A very generous Giveaway! My review will be posted this weekend for her first book, French Twist! She writes a great story. Please comment below for your chance at the Giveaway!

Annie: First, I’d like to say that I cannot wait to read about you and your husband meeting, etc.  This is going to be fun, I can tell! I loved the first book in your series, and cannot wait to read the other two! We are going to be great friends! 🙂

I also love how your covers are unique, and stand out in a way that says “this is a book by Glynis Astie!!French Twist small

Q:  When did you realize you were a novelist?

I’ve never actually had that “aha!” moment. After my second son was born, it became clear I would stay at home with my boys-since paying for daycare would take the majority of my salary. One night, I had a dream that I wrote a book–which was totally bizarre, since I had never aspired to be a novelist. The thought kept nagging me, so after a few weeks, I gave in and began writing my ideas down. Three months later, I had a book! It was amazing!

Annie: I cannot believe that you wrote a book in 3 months. That is amazing! You are definitely a natural!

Q:  As you would gear up for your book releases, what was French Toast smallthe most exciting part(s) for you?

I LOVE revealing the cover. My sister is an amazing graphic artist and she very patiently translates my ideas into the final product. (I’m extremely jealous of her. She got all the talent in the family!) Books are definitely judged–at least initially–by their covers and she gives me a great way to pull readers in. Then it’s up to me to capture them with my glowing wit!

Annie: I say you have a talented family! That is great!

Q:  Will you always write stories based on your real life events?  Is that your favorite topic to explore?

Since my career as an author began accidentally as a way to tell the world about my whirlwind romance with a sexy, intelligent and charismatic Frenchman, my first three books were based on my real life. The book I’m currently writing is *gasp* complete fiction. I’m a little nervous, but mostly excited. It’s quite freeing to invent a story from start to finish, having your characters follow a path you never expected. And not having to worry about your family being annoyed with how you represented them in a book? Priceless.

Annie: I am in love with your love story!!! Knowing that it comes from a real love story is so cool!

Q:  Is there an author that you feel resonates with you and your writing style?

I’m a huge fan of wacky heroines, so I identify with Sophie Kinsella and Helen Fielding. Becky Bloomwood and Bridget Jones made me laugh harder than I had in a long time! I’ve been told by a few readers that I remind them of Janet Evanovich with my casual tone and asides to the reader. I was truly humbled by these comments and have added many French Fry smallof her books to my reading list.

Annie: I can see how your writing style is like Helen Fielding…Definitely as much fun to read, too!

Q: When do you typically write?  Where do you write?  Set this up for us…

I’m a stay-at-home mom, so writing time is extremely difficult to find. I have two very active boys who keep me on my toes! Most of my writing takes place while they are in school, since I lack the ability to rise before the sun and my brain is no longer capable of logical thought after they go to bed. As far as where I write…brace yourself! Most of my writing takes place while sitting on my couch. How’s that for exciting? Perhaps I spent too many years behind a desk and my body now craves the comfort of fluffy furniture to allow my creativity to flow. Whatever the reason, it works for me!Glynis with Cat

Here is Glynis with her Feline Advisor!

Q:  May I ask who your favorite authors are?  Books?

I have been a fan of Lucy Maude Montgomery for years. I wanted to be Anne and move to Green Gables. As mentioned earlier, I love Sophie Kinsella and Helen Fielding as well as Jennifer Weiner and Jane Green. I also enjoy mysteries and suspense, with Agatha Christie as my absolute favorite author.

Annie: Ok, you had me at Anne at Green Gables! I need to reread that book. and, I must read Sophie Kinsella…I have the books, but have not read them yet…Same with Jennifer Weiner. I love Jane Green!!

Q:  What is your favorite part of being an author?

Making my readers laugh, hands down. When I read a review where the person mentions laughing out loud while reading one of my books, I have a smile on my face all day. I crack myself up often as I write, but it’s much better to elicit such a reaction from a complete stranger. 🙂

Annie: Consider yourself accomplished! I was laughing out loud!

Q:  When can we expect your next book?  Do you want to tell us a little bit about it?

My plan is to release my next book in the spring of 2016. I have decided to add a small element of fantasy to my chick lit this time. It won’t be like anything you’ve read before!

Annie: Very excited!!

Q:  Do you have hobbies outside of writing?

Many! I love to bake. I’m constantly trying out new cupcake, cookie, brownie–pretty much every kind of sweets–recipes. Since I love baking so much I spend a lot of time exercising. I read often and watch far too much TV for my own good. I’m a total Netflix junkie.

Lastly, Book or eBook??

This is a tough question to answer. Nothing can replace the feel of a book in your hands. I love the smell of the fresh ink and the feel of the pages in my hand as I turn them. However, I’m a voracious reader (which helps to explain why it takes me so long to release a new book) and I thoroughly enjoy having a variety of books at my disposal while I’m out and about. I spend a lot of time in various waiting rooms and never know what kind of book I will be in the mood for. (That’s right! I live on the edge and read more than one book at a time.) In addition, my purse is already weighed down with my two sons’ various accoutrements and my Kindle is lighter than an actual book! Practicality wins out for me.

Annie: Thank you for taking the time to let us all get to know you better….I am excited to see who wins your Giveaways! This is a great prize! #SPRINKLELOVE

~~Author Bio~~

Glynis never expected in her wildest dreams to be a writer. After thirteen years in the Human Resources Industry, she decided to stay at home with her two amazing sons. Ever in search of a project, she was inspired to write the story of how she met and married her wonderfully romantic French husband, Sebastien, in six short months. The end result became her first novel, French Twist. As this was just the beginning of their epic love story, Glynis continued to chronicle their adventures in the sequel, French Toast and the final installment in the series, French Fry.

When Glynis is not writing, she is trying to keep the peace amongst the three men and two cats in her life, finding missing body parts (Lego pieces are small!), supervising a myriad of homework assignments and keeping a tenuous hold on her sanity by consuming whatever chocolate is in the vicinity.

FRENCH TOAST:

Sydney Bennett is back! And her pursuit of perfection is alive and well. Naïve to the core, Sydney believed that when she finally married the man of her dreams, the hard part was over. Following a civil ceremony as a means to keep Louis from being deported, Sydney continues to plan the fairytale wedding that she had dreamed of since the age of five. Much to her chagrin, she discovers that her mother-in-law is planning what seems to be a rival wedding in France that SHE has been dreaming about for her only child since before he was born. How will poor Sydney be able to ensure two perfect weddings in the midst of Louis’ fruitless job search? Especially when her mother-in-law’s idea of perfection appears to be having Sydney embarrass herself in front of hundreds of French people that she has never met?
As if she didn’t have enough on her mind already, Sydney finds herself faced with the trials and tribulations of being a wife. Sydney had always heard that marriage was hard, but she thought that this was just a ruse that married couples portrayed in a bid to make single girls feel less desperate. But as the bills pile up and emotions run high, she realizes that there may just be some truth to this statement. And as she watches Louis’ perfection fade away before her very eyes, she begins to wonder if she made a rash decision in marrying a man that she had known for a mere six months.
With all of the obstacles that Sydney and Louis will encounter, will they be raising their glasses in celebration or watching their impulsive marriage crash and burn? One thing is for certain, Sydney and Louis Durand are headed for one hell of a toast…

French FryFRENCH FRY:

Sydney Durand had finally achieved the perfect life she had always wanted. After a whirlwind romance with a charming Frenchman, she endured the three weddings it required to satisfy the members of the newly formed Bennett-Durand clan. All she had left to do was stroll into the sunset with Louis to enjoy their long-awaited happily ever after.

But everything changed when the stick turned blue. Suddenly, Sydney finds herself facing the daunting task of becoming a mother before she has even returned home from her honeymoon. Keeping a tenacious hold on her hard-won happiness, Sydney is determined not to give up without a fight – no matter what or who is thrown in her path…and that includes an overbearing mother-in-law, a know-it-all father and her own anxiety about having a baby.

Will she finally be able to tame her neuroses for the sake of her unborn child? Or will her hormone-induced panic cause a meltdown of epic proportions? One thing is clear: Sydney and Louis’ nerves are going to fry…

#BookReview ~ “Ever After” by Rachel Lacey

Ever AfterSUMMARY:

CAUGHT IN THE ACT
Olivia Bennett is not having a happy birthday. Instead of blowing out her twenty-nine candles, she’s stuck in jail, caught red-handed in a graffiti incident that (perhaps) involved one too many strawberry margaritas. Worst idea ever. The only bright side is that she ended up in the strong arms of the most gorgeous lawman she’s ever seen.

Pete Sampson (aka Deputy Hot Stuff) faces intense pressure from the sheriff to find out who’s behind a string of vandalisms. And after her spray-painting spree, Olivia is suspect number one. Still, Pete can’t stop thinking about her. Wanting her. Now he’s torn between his duty and his overpowering desire for the vivacious waitress. But he may have to bend the rules because true love is more important than the letter of the law . . .

REVIEW:

Endearing Romance! I loved the characters!! I loved the animals!! This story was so much fun!

We meet Olivia Bennett on her 29th Birthday. After her night out celebrating, she is caught red-handed spray-painting the side of the building of a local chicken farm…sending a message about their mistreatment of animals. She is an Animal Activist on a mission! She is arrested, and spends the night in jail. Deputy Pete Sampson was the arresting officer, and he is very handsome. They crush on each other right away…their chemistry was electric.

This is the story of their romance. I cannot tell you more, as you will enjoy the story more with this tid-bit of information.

This is the beginning of a wonderful adventure between Olivia and Pete. Olivia’s passion for animals and their humane treatment is awe-inspiring. She is a force to be reckoned with…and, Pete knows this…yet, he cannot stop thinking about her. Olivia thinks of him often, too.

Olivia was so sassy, with Pete being more reserved. I think this is what made them great for one another.

This story is told so well, with both their love for one another blossoming and their love of animals being front and center. They are both in a place where they are figuring out their next step in life.

Pete rescues a dog….Olivia rescues a cat….Can they rescue one another??

4 Stars.

#INTERVIEW & #GIVEAWAY – Get to know Rachel Lacey, Author of the Romance novels, “Unleashed”, “For Keeps”, & “Ever After”

Rachel LaceyRachel Lacey is giving away an autographed copy of her newest book, “Ever After”!! (US Residents Only) YOU WILL LOVE THIS BOOK!!!

Please comment below to Enter. The winner will be announced after 5pm on Monday, October 15th, 2015.

First, I would like to say that I adore your covers!!  They are very endearing…
Thank you so much! The art department at Forever Romance does such a great job. They have really spoiled me with beautiful covers.

Annie: Your books look great on my shelf, and I loved EverAfter!!

Q:  When did you realize you were a novelist?
I don’t think I had a specific moment; it was more of a slow progression for me. I had been writing for fun since I was a teenager, but it wasn’t until about five years ago that I decided to get serious and see if I could actually publish a book. Even then, it took a while before I truly felt like an author and not just a shy girl writing stories on her laptop! 🙂

Annie: Well, I believe you are a very talented author!  I am in love with your storytelling! I really enjoyed this story because of how you had the main characters love animals so much…and, everyone was so likeable, they felt like friends.

Q:  As you gear up for the August, 25th, 2015 Book Release of your third story in your “Love to the Rescue” Series, what was the most exciting part(s) for you?
Great question! For me, the most exciting part of release day is seeing my book “in the wild.” I always ask people to send me pictures, because for me there is really nothing more exciting than seeing my books on the shelves, or on your e-reader, or in your hands (or anywhere really!) It makes me so happy!

Annie: Makes your fans happy, too!

Q:  Will you always write love stories about beautiful couples and rescued dogs?  Is that your favorite topic to explore?

????????????????????????????????????

(Here is Rachel with her Rescued Boxer, Lacy…sooo cute!)

For now, contemporary romance is all I write, although I can’t say for sure that it will never change. But I love creating the magic of helping two people overcome all the obstacles in their way to fall in love. Animal rescue won’t be as prominent in my next series, but you can definitely expect to see future heroes and heroines of mine who have a rescue dog (or cat!) in their lives.

Q:  Is there an author that you feel resonates with you and your writing style?
Jill Shalvis was the first author I read before I was published where I said “Yes! This! This is what I want to write.” I love her style. She writes with so much humor, but she also packs a lot of emotional punch. I want to laugh *and* cry when I read a great romance. I want to feel all the emotions that the characters are feeling, and Jill does that perfectly.

Q: When do you typically write?  Where do you write?  Set this up for us….IMG_20150916_231836
Ahh, the non-glamorous truth comes out! 🙂 I do most of my writing late at night after my son is in bed. My “work day” generally starts around 9pm, and I work until at least midnight. I have an office, but the truth is I usually write on the couch. It’s comfy!
Annie: I love this picture of you working with your Assistant, Luke!!

Q:  May I ask who your favorite authors are?  Books?
Well, as you might have guessed from my earlier answer, Jill Shalvis is one of my favorites. Her Lucky Harbor series is my all-time favorite romance series. Julie James is another auto-buy author for me.  And Lori Wilde. Her Jubilee, Texas, and Twilight, Texas, are two of my favorite series. A few other recent favorites are Carolina Man by Virginia Kantra and Need You For Keeps by Marina Adair.

Annie: I love getting recommendations from other authors! This is great!

Q:  What is your favorite part of being an author?
I get to actually do my dream job! How many people can say that? I feel so incredibly fortunate to be able to do what I love and get paid for it. Without a doubt, my favorite part of being an author is hearing from readers. Knowing that someone read and enjoyed one of my books is just the best thing ever. I can’t even explain how much it means to me!

Annie: Posting your review for EverAfter! I will be sure to send you the link!

Q:  When can we expect your next book?  Do you want to tell us a little bit about it?
My next full-length book is called Run to You, and it will be out August 30th, 2016. It’s the first in a new contemporary romance series that follows three men who met as children in the foster care system and have reunited as adults to open an extreme outdoor adventure facility in the small mountain town of Haven, North Carolina. I am so excited about the new series and can’t wait to share more information soon!

Annie: Please make sure I get this to review!! SO EXCITING!!

Lastly, Book or eBook??
You know, I love both! I probably read more on my Kindle these days, but I definitely still buy and read plenty of paperbacks. I can’t imagine I’d ever give them up completely.

Thanks so much for having me as your guest, Annie, and for the fun interview. I’m so happy to be here on The Write Review.

Annie: Rachel, Thank you for being here…You have a loyal fan in me!!
